FREE VERSE FRIDAY #2 WINTER

I've decided to join Beverly A Baird, Linda Schueler and others in a "year long poetry practice – on the first Friday of each Month," when they, and anyone else who joins, will be writing a poem based on the theme of the month and a photo taken relating to that theme.

You can find out more about this here.

I missed the January poem, so I'm starting in February.

I didn't quite get the photo part, so after I wrote a half decent draft of my poem, I sent it off to my partner, Randy Rotheisler, and a friend, Ron Peace, both gifted photographers, asking for images to accompany it. I was gobsmacked by their submissions! Choosing one from each of them was very challenging!

From Randy Rotheisler

From Ron Peace

winter

the old man takes a break

nods off for a bit

we celebrate

rejoicing in the milder weather

consider spring in the offing

not yet you motherfuckers

the old man laughs

another blizzard devours the land

pipes freeze

frostbite threatens exposed

fingers and noses

cars refuse to start

whining and complaining continues

yet when

morning hoarfrost

etches white across the land

and the world transforms into

a crystal garden

illuminated by

pale sunlight

we mortal creatures

genuflect

in the presence

of such cruel beauty

  1. Wow - the photos are stunning and the poem is incredible. I can just see that old man laughing at us thinking that winter is over. As we shiver in -18C weather here in Ontario.
Thanks so much for joining in the fun! I'll ad your name to have others visit.

    1. It's not that cold here in the Okanogan, but it's still below freezing. We are looking forward to warmer weather next week, but then the old man is expected to come back with a vengeance.

  2. Amazing poem! I especially like the crystal garden part, as that is one of my favourite parts of winter. How lucky you are to have two talented photographers to work with.

    1. Thank you. I am indeed lucky! Winter brings all kinds of beauty, but it can get tedious when it seems to go on forever.
