Snooze-O-Rama: The Strange Ways That Animals Sleep Maria Birmingham & Kyle Reed (Illustrator)

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. It was released Mar 15, 2021 by Owlkids Books. If you don't already have a copy in your library, you should get one now.

This is a clever bedtime read for children. Associations are made between the sleeping patterns of humans to the sleeping patterns of different animals.

On one page a statement is made about humans. On the next page a comparison is made to a specific animal and its sleeping habits. This second page includes scientific information about the species. I learned all kinds of things I didn't know before.

I appreciate that these connections are made across all kinds of animals from insects to primates.

Relationships are made to birds in the air.

Others are made to animals in the seas.

There are even parallels to animals that live underground!

I've used photoshop to show these connections as one page spreads, but in the book, the human action is shown on one side and the page is turned to see the animal example.

Kyle Read, the illustrator, works in digital and traditional collage. His colorful, detailed work will make little ones want to spend ages examining these pages.

At a time when we are facing extinction rates at an increasing rate, books like this help to bridge the gap between humans and the rest of the planet.

I've added this to my list of potential birthday gift from my older grandkids who will be turning four this June.
